Stop trying to win everyone in Johannesburg

A firm that speaks to everyone gets chosen by no one in particular. The narrower your promise, the faster the right client recognises themselves in it.

Ask most firms who they serve and you get a version of the same answer. Any business that needs us. It sounds generous. It reads, to the person on the other end, as a shrug.

When you aim at everyone, you build a message soft enough to offend no one and specific enough to move no one. The prospect scans it, finds nothing that sounds like their exact problem, and moves on. Not because you are not good. Because they could not tell.

A common fear is that choosing a niche shrinks the market. The opposite happens. A litigation boutique that says "we act for medical professionals facing HPCSA complaints" has not lost the wider legal market. It has become the obvious first call for a specific, frightened, well-resourced client who will pay for certainty. The narrower the promise, the higher the price it can carry.

There are tens of thousands of businesses in Johannesburg. You do not need all of them. You need to be the clear answer for a slice of them, and you need that slice to recognise itself in your first sentence.

Being a small option for everyone is worse than being the only sensible option for someone.

Good positioning passes a simple test. Your ideal client reads it and thinks "that is me" before they think "that is clever". Recognition beats persuasion. You are not trying to argue someone into needing you. You are trying to be legible to the people who already do.

Try this. Write the sentence a current client would use to describe you to a peer in their industry.

Now compare it to your website. If the two do not match, your positioning is being written by your clients while you pay to contradict them.

Positioning is a set of noes. You give up the walk-in enquiries that were never going to close. You give up looking like the safe generalist. What you get back is a pipeline of people who arrive halfway convinced, because your message did the qualifying before the call did.

This is uncomfortable for a reason. Saying no to a whole category of work feels like leaving money on the table. In practice it is the fastest way to stop competing on price, because the client who needs exactly you is not shopping around on exactly you.

You cannot be the obvious choice and the safe generalist at the same time. Pick one. Only one of them commands a premium.

At Ten 15 J.T., the first thing we do with a founder is narrow the story, not widen it. It feels like a loss for about a week. Then the right enquiries start arriving as if they already know you.
