Give away your best thinking
The fear is that if you tell them how, they will not pay you to do it. The firms that teach the most are trusted the most, and trust is what gets paid.
There is a fear that stops good firms from publishing anything useful. If we explain how we do it, the client will just do it themselves, or take our thinking to a cheaper competitor. So the real insight stays locked away, and the website fills up with careful, generic nothing.
The fear is understandable and it is backwards. Giving away your best thinking does not make you replaceable. It makes you credible. In a market where everyone claims to be an expert, credibility is the only thing that actually separates you.
Knowing is not the same as doingHere is what the fear misses. Telling someone what to do is not the same as them being able to do it. A surgeon can explain the operation in detail on a podcast. You still would not want to hold the scalpel. The value was never the secret. It was the judgment, the experience, and the accountability of having someone do it properly.
When you explain your thinking clearly, most readers do not think "great, I will do this myself". They think "these people clearly know what they are doing, and I do not want to do it without them". You have just made the sale without pitching.
What about the rival who lifts your ideas. Let them. By the time a competitor has copied your published thinking, you are three steps ahead, and the market associates the idea with you, not the copyist. Being the source of an idea is a position no one can take from you by repeating it. If anything, they are advertising you.
A rule of thumb we use. Publish the what and the why generously, and let the how-for-your-exact-situation be the paid conversation.
Nobody reads a clear article on strategy and concludes they no longer need a strategist. They conclude they have found one.
The most trusted firm in a market is almost always the one that taught it something. Generosity is not the risk. Silence is.
At Ten 15 J.T., we help firms turn what they genuinely know into work that builds authority in public. Not the watered-down version. The real thing, which is the only version that earns trust.
