Your cheapest clients cost the most

The client who fights hardest over the invoice is usually the one emailing at 11pm on a Sunday. Price is not only a number. It is a filter.

Every firm has one. The client who negotiated the fee down at the start, and has been the most demanding, most anxious, least satisfied account ever since. It is not a coincidence. It is a pattern, and it shows up almost everywhere we look.

The client who pushes hardest on price is telling you something before you have done any work. They do not yet believe the outcome is worth what you charge. That belief does not improve once the discount is agreed. It follows them into every email, every review, every request for one small extra thing that was definitely in scope.

Discounted work does not just earn less. It costs more to deliver. The low-fee client tends to demand the most reassurance, the most revisions, and the most out-of-hours attention, because they are nervous about money they were reluctant to spend in the first place. Meanwhile the account is too small to matter and too loud to ignore, and it quietly crowds out the clients you actually want.

Run it honestly and the cheap client is often the least profitable line on your books, sometimes the only unprofitable one. You took the work to keep the lights on. It is dimming them.

A discount does not win you a grateful client. It wins you a doubtful one, and doubt is expensive to service.

In professional services, price is information. It tells the buyer how seriously to take you, and it filters who walks through the door. Raise your fees and two things happen. The bargain hunters leave, which is the point, and the clients who remain treat the work with the seriousness the price implies.

A test before your next quote. Ask whether you would be comfortable if this client told ten peers exactly what they paid.

If the number embarrasses you because it is too low, you are training the market to undervalue you. Your price is a public statement, even when you think it is private.

We are not suggesting you gouge anyone. We are suggesting you stop subsidising the clients who respect you least with the energy your best clients deserve. There is nothing noble about being cheap and overworked. It is just a slower way to burn out.

The firms that price with confidence are not greedier. They are clearer about the value they create, and that clarity is contagious. Clients believe your price roughly as much as you do.

Charge in a way that attracts the clients you want and repels the ones you dread. The invoice is doing the sorting whether you plan it or not.

At Ten 15 J.T., we help firms position so that price stops being an argument and starts being a signal. The right number does not just pay better. It brings better clients with it.
