The best time to build your brand was five years ago

A reputation is planted, not bought. There is an old line about the best time to plant a tree, and it is the reason this piece is short.

There is a proverb that gets quoted so often it has almost stopped meaning anything. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now. It is a cliche because it is true, and nowhere is it truer than in how firms build a name.

A brand does not arrive. It accumulates. Every clear article, every kept promise, every client who leaves impressed adds a small deposit to an account that compounds quietly in the background. Do it for a month and nothing seems to happen. Do it for three years and you become the firm everyone in your field somehow already knows.

The reason most firms never build a brand is that the early returns are invisible. You publish, you show up, you stay consistent, and for a long stretch the phone does not ring any differently. It is tempting to conclude it is not working and stop. That is precisely the moment the people who keep going start to pull away from the ones who quit.

Reputation is a compounding curve, and compounding curves are boring until they are not. The gap between the firm that started and the firm that meant to start looks small at six months. At three years it is a canyon.

You cannot cram a reputation the week before you need it. It only pays the firms that started when it felt pointless.

There are two honest times to start building your brand. The best one has passed, and there is nothing to be done about that except stop mourning it. The second-best one is today, before you need the pipeline, before the quiet quarter, before a competitor with less talent and more patience becomes the obvious choice simply by having shown up for longer.

The trap is waiting for a better moment. After this project. Once things calm down. When we have more time.

That moment does not come, and every month spent waiting is a month of compounding you will never get back. Start small, start rough, but start on a day that ends in the word today.

The best time was five years ago. The second-best time is the reason we kept this one short. Go.

At Ten 15 J.T., we would rather help you start an unglamorous version now than wait for the perfect one later. The tree does not care that the soil is not ideal. It cares that it is in the ground.
